SMS Group recognizes the importance of preserving the global environment in order to realize a sustainable society, and is working to reduce the environmental footprint of its business activities based on the "SMS Environmental Policy."
SMS Environmental Policy
Fundamental philosophy
SMS's Mission is "to improve people's quality of life by providing information infrastructure suitable for an aging society." We believe that by working to solve the various social issues that arise in an aging society as the foundation of our business, and by realizing our Mission, we can contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. By working to solve social issues through our business activities, we can achieve sustainable growth as a company that is needed by society. Increasing our corporate value over the long term through the accumulation of sustainable growth supports the realization of our Mission more powerfully and leads to the realization of a sustainable society. SMS Group recognizes the importance of preserving the global environment in order to realize a sustainable society, and is working to reduce the environmental footprint of its business activities.
Scope
The Policy applies to all officers and employees of SMS Co., Ltd. and all group companies in Japan and overseas. Furthermore, we expect our business partners to support the principles of this Policy and strive to collaborate with them to reduce environmental footprint.
Governance Structure
The Sustainability Promotion Office coordinates with all relevant departments to spearhead specific initiatives based on this Policy. The Sustainability Committee, chaired by the CEO and composed of all Directors, regularly monitors the progress and status of these activities. Furthermore, the Board of Directors provides oversight of the entire implementation process and related initiatives through the Committee.
Initiatives on climate change
We recognize climate change as a critical global challenge and are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout our business activities. We continuously work on ensuring transparent disclosure based on internationally recognized frameworks. Additionally, we have set Science Based Targets (SBTs) aligned with the levels required by the Paris Agreement and are promoting initiatives to achieve these targets. Furthermore, we will not make any investments that would promote the expansion of fossil fuels, or provide funding to organizations or lobbying activities that undermine climate action.
Contribution to a circular economy
We are committed to transitioning to a circular economy, aiming for the sustainable use of resources. We are actively promoting the effective use of office supplies and the reduction of waste. We also collaborate with our suppliers and business partners to find solutions that minimize resource waste.
Beyond regulatory compliance
We comply with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, and standards. At the same time, we go beyond mere compliance by leveraging our business operations to help reduce the environmental footprint of our customers. For example, Kaipoke, a management support platform for elderly/disability care operators, contributes to significant paper reduction in insurance claim and back-office tasks by enabling the digitalization of their workflows.
Collaboration with stakeholders
We are working to reduce our environmental footprint not only in our direct business activities but also throughout the entire value chain (upstream and downstream). We engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including investors, suppliers, business partners, and employees, to share environmental insights and challenges, fostering collaborative solutions.
This Policy and its associated targets are reviewed periodically to ensure they reflect changes in the social landscape, the business environment, and the expectations of our stakeholders.

Initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint
The following are the key initiatives at SMS Co., Ltd.
Use of renewable energy
Some of our offices are located in buildings that have adopted electricity plans that include renewable energy. We check the electricity plans at each location regularly, in conjunction with our GHG emissions calculations. For locations that have not yet adopted such plans, we will continue to encourage building owners to introduce them.
Automated management of air conditioning
We place importance on working efficiently and productively within business hours, and each department sets its own office closing time. Air conditioning is time-controlled by floor and shuts off automatically at that time, reducing energy consumption.
Installation of energy-saving lighting
We are reducing the energy our lighting uses by installing LED lighting in the buildings where our offices are located. For locations where LED lighting is not yet in place, we engage with building owners to encourage its introduction.
Waste reduction through employee awareness
Through office guides provided to each location, we make sure employees understand how to sort and dispose of waste, ensuring appropriate waste management in line with designated disposal routes. We also work to reduce the use of disposable containers, for example by encouraging employees to use their own reusable bottles at our water dispensers.
Resource conservation through proper management of supplies
We have transitioned from a free-access system for office supplies and stationery to a managed checkout system. This change helps us minimize resource waste and curb excessive purchasing.
Reuse and repair of supplies and materials
We have set up reuse boxes in our offices so that unneeded stationery and computer peripherals can be reused across departments. We also reuse cardboard boxes and clear files from internal shipments. In addition, we repair and extend the life of certain items, such as headsets, reducing waste and making better use of resources.
Paperless initiatives
We are promoting paperless internal meetings by using groupware and monitors. We have also implemented a secure print system to reduce printing errors and unnecessary output.
Green procurement
We actively procure environmentally friendly products. For example, we have adopted FSC-certified paper as our standard office supply, working to reduce our environmental footprint through the use of eco-friendly products.
